This program brings one-hour presentations to you and your staff on any of the following topics.

  • Concrete Pavement Design
  • Concrete Pavement Repair
  • Concrete Fundamentals
  • Concrete Specifications
  • Concrete Pavement Myths
  • Life Cycle Cost Analysis

Concrete Pavement Design - Introduction and demonstration of pavement design software.  U.S. concrete industry associations recognized the importance of having better tools available to assist pavement designers. To that end, the concrete industry collaborated to develop one industry recommended pavement design tool specifically for pavements that serve the parking, street, and industrial markets. The web-based tool, known as PavementDesigner.org combines existing best design practices for jointed and continuously reinforced concrete pavements, concrete overlays, roller-compacted concrete, and cement-treated bases and soils. Concrete Discovery Series presenters introduces the website and demonstrates how to use it.

Concrete Pavement Repair - An introduction to concrete street and parking lot maintenance and repair. All pavements will require maintenance and repair during their lifetime. Understanding when maintenance should occur, and the types of repairs required, are important to both economic and performance criteria. The Concrete Discovery Series shows how to assess observed distresses and the various maintenance techniques for concrete pavement repair.

Concrete Fundamentals - An overview of concrete constituent materials and the desired properties for plastic and hardened concrete. Factors that influence the quality of concrete will be covered. An overview of the proper methods and procedures for transporting, forming, placing and finishing concrete will be addressed. The Concrete Discovery Series covers transporting, forming, placement, conveyance, proper curing, and the precautions for hot and cold weather concreting.

Concrete Specifications - Guidance for development of a materials and construction specification for concrete paving. The materials and construction specification is a critical document, as it communicates the design engineer's requirements for a project. A well developed specification optimizes competitive bidding and minimizes problems on the job.

Concrete Pavement Myths - Some of the more common myths about concrete pavements will be reviewed and debunked. Many common questions about concrete pavement will be addressed, such as:

  • Is more cement always better?
  • Is steel in concrete pavement necessary?
  • Does adding steel increase the load carrying capacity?
  • Are dowels required at all joints?
  • Is a thick aggregate base required to support heavy loads?
  • When can concrete be opened to traffic?
  • Does cracked pavement mean it has failed?
  • Is concrete more expensive than asphalt?

Pavement Life Cycle Cost Analysis - Learn about the basic principles of LCCA that help determine pavement type selection.  A simple process with associated software will be presented and example projects will be examined.

The Concrete Discovery Series is supported by experts from the following organizations.

  • ARM of Minnesota
  • The Concrete Paving Association of Minnesota (CPAM)
  • The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA)
  • The National Concrete Pavement Technology Center
  • The American Concrete Pavement Association

Logistical options include:

  • Lunch and learn at your office
  • Break-time in your office with snacks and beverages
  • After-hours at an eatery near your office
