ARM Adopts New By-Laws & Elects New Board Members

ARM, at its annual Membership Meeting held December 13th in Minneapolis, adopted a new set of bylaws and elected a new Board of Directors.

The new bylaws were written and reviewed over the course of the year by the Board of Directors. The majority of the new bylaws were adopted by the Board in October while the remaining sections that needed membership approval were adopted this month. Many of the changes to the bylaws revolved around the makeup of the Board of Directors, what constitutes a quorum and the formal organization of the Aggregate Division and the Ready Mix Division.

Once the new bylaws were adopted, a new Board of Directors was elected. The 2007 Executive Committee is as follows: President: Mark Bintzler (Aggregate Industries). Vice-President: To Be Determined. Treasurer: Mike Toomey (Aggregate Industries). Past-President: Thor Becken (Cemstone Products Company)

Other “Producer Member” Directors include: Jerry Carlson (Arrowhead Concrete Works); Mike Caron (Tiller Corporation); Skip DeMarais (Knife River North Central); Dave Edmunds (Kraemer Mining & Materials); Joe Egan (Northern Con-Agg); Dale Johnson (Strata Corporation); Steve Linegar (AME Red-E-Mix); Jay Morrell (JME Companies) and Don Vry (Aggregate Industries).

“Associate Member” Directors include: Bill Brown (Headwaters Resources); Dave Fennessy (Propex Concrete Systems); Andy Julius (BASF Admixtures); Dave Meyer (Lafarge Cement); Matt Parrish (Holcim (US) Inc.) and Dave Rinas (Lehigh Cement)

RMC Foundation Releases Pervious Concrete Research Report

The RMC Research & Education Foundation is proud to announce the release of its latest pervious concrete research report. The study, “Portland Cement Pervious Concrete Pavement: Field Performance Investigation on Parking Lot and Roadway Pavements”, was conducted at Cleveland State University over three years. It includes a long-term field performance investigation on the use of pervious concrete, particularly in areas where freeze-thaw conditions are prevalent. Although the use of pervious concrete has increased significantly in southern climates over the last decade, northern locations have not as widely embraced its use due to questions about its performance in cold weather. This new study validates that pervious concrete has performed well in freeze-thaw environments, with little maintenance required.

The study is the latest of several final and on-going pervious concrete research projects funded by the RMC Research & Education Foundation. “The Foundation’s Board of Trustees has funded several pervious concrete projects due to the tremendous opportunities the application offers from an environmental standpoint, including stormwater management. This latest study should provide assurance that it can be successfully placed in cold climates, resulting in safer parking lots and roadways with reduced icy conditions as melting snow runs through the pavement rather than re-freezing on it,” said Foundation Chairman Dominique Calabrese. Added Foundation Executive Director Julie Garbini “The recommendations included in this report for placing pervious concrete in freeze-thaw environments will allow designers and concrete producers to use pervious concrete with confidence in areas prone to harsh
winter weather.”

The full report may be downloaded form the Foundation’s website at www.rmc-foundation.org where information on the Foundation’s other pervious concrete, research and educational projects may also be found.

Watershed District now Sees Storm Water as a Liquid Asset

That storm water running off the roof, down the street, across the parking lot and into a sewer grate must be stopped, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has decided.
After decades of viewing storm water as a problem to pipe away, the district now sees it as a resource that should be put to good use right where it lands.

"The water that falls from the sky and lands on your property -- you own that water, you are responsible for that water," said Eric Evenson, watershed district administrator.
This new direction comes from the quiet governing body that regulates the level and quality of water in Lake Minnetonka, Minnehaha Creek and the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes.

Storm Resistant Homes & Buildings Seminar Planned

ARM will be working with the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association to bring a seminar titled “Storm Resistant Homes & Buildings” to Minnesota April 9, 2008.  Concrete has long been recognized as the material of choice for resisting high winds, flying debris, and storm surge associated with hurricanes and tornadoes. Now attendees of this seminar can learn how concrete building systems can be used to build storm resistant homes and buildings right here in Minnesota.  Contact the ARM office at 952.707.1250 with questions.
